Venice Glass Week 2019

Third year for the Venice Glass Week, i.e. the enetian International Festival dedicated to the art of glass – dal 7 al 15 Settembre 2019. from 7 to 15 September 2019. More than 180 events spread between Venice, Murano and Mestre.

Of all the events – including exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, seminars, award ceremonies, screenings, educational activities, parties, aperitifs and open furnaces – we have selected some of the most worthy of attention, divided by areas of the lagoon: the Island of San Giorgio, Piazza San Marco, Murano.

Island of San Giorgio

The exhibition “Thomas Stearns at Venini” (at Le Stanze del Vetro) opens on 9 September and will be open until 5 January 2020. The exhibition covers the entire glass production of young Stearns, for the first time: all the unique pieces and the small series of glasses created between 1961 and 1962, so characteristic for their asymmetries and the chromatic combinations that recall the Venetian tradition. Among the works exhibited there are also small series of vases and lamps, author proofs, prototypes and the original sculpture Sentinella di Venezia, ​​the abstract masterpiece of Stearns.

The exhibition “M.V.M. Cappellin glassware and the young Carlo Scarpa 1925-1931” (also at Le Stanze del Vetro from 9 September to 5 January 2020) reconstructs the history of this important Venetian glassware laboratory focusing in particular on the years from 1925 to 193, in which the young architect Scarpa joined the company.

Piazza San Marco

At the exhibition “The places of wonders” at the Ravagnan Gallery in Piazza San Marco) fantastic glass and crystal architectures will be exhibited, representing imaginary and real landscapes, cities and small wonders. The inauguration is on September 7th at 17:00 and the exhibition will continue beyond the duration of the festival, until 30 September 2019.

At the historic Caffè Florian the exhibition “Murano in vacuum” (from 12 to 15 September) by the glass artist Fabio Fornasier: Fornasier is a true Muranese, who learned the art in his father’s furnace and early opened his own furnace in Murano, where he creates innovative chandeliers, suspended between tradition and modernity. In the splendid setting of the Florian you can admire his goblets that turn into chandeliers and light up the oldest coffee shop in the world..

Murano

DFrom 7 to 30 September walking through Murano you will easily come across “Murano Glass Street Art”: an exhibition of murals, glass works and live performance which is also an extraordinary meeting point for street artists and glass masters. 14 companies from Murano and 8 street artists participate were called for this event to realize some murals inside the Effetre Murano furnace.

The “Murano Glass Weekend” from September 13 to 15 will close the Festival, with events spread throughout the island: open furnaces, exhibitions, guided tours, regattas, concerts, meetings and the 2019 edition of “Bocca del Fuoco”, a night running race in which the participants will run on the streets and bridges of Murano along a path lit by candles, crossing glass furnaces in full operation on Saturday 14 September.
